Proceedings in the Senate chambers Wednesday assumes a different dimension as
PDP senators led by their leader Senator Godswill Akpabio staged a walkout and
the Labour Party Senator from Delta Ovie Omo-Agege assumed the role of
minority.
The
PDP senators’ action followed the uproar that trailed their rejection of the
defection of one of their own, Senator Yele Omogunwa (Ondo South) from the PDP
to the majority APC.
Senator
Yele Omogunwa representing Ondo South was elected to the senate on the platform
of the PDP but announced his defection to the APC on the eve of the November
26, 2016 Ondo State gubernatorial election won by Mr Akeredolu of his new party, the APC.
At
Wednesday’s sitting, Senate President Bukola Saraki read Senator Omogunwa’s
letter in which he cited the division in the PDP as his ground for defecting to
the APC.
However,
Omogunwa’s defection did not go down well with his former colleagues in PDP and
Senate minority leader Akpabio raised a point of order insisting there is no
division in the PDP, a position that led to chaos and consequently Akpabio led
his PDP colleagues to stage a walkout.
The
senate President then called on Senator Ovie Omo-Agege representing Delta Central District to assume the role of
the minority and the senate business of the day continued
