Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara wants President Muhammadu Buhari to rally other heads of states in ECOWAS to stop Gambian President Yahya Jammeh from halting democracy in his country.
Jameh, who initially conceded defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow in the country’s presidential election on 1 December, made a U-turn on Friday, citing “abnormalities” in the vote and called for fresh elections.
But Dogara, in a statement, noted that, “Nigeria must lead efforts and where necessary, intervene to stop the outgoing Gambian President, Yahya Jameh, from reneging on his remarkable action in earlier accepting defeat.”
The Speaker stated that ECOWAS leaders should, “take all necessary measures to stop defeated President of The Gambia from plunging the country into anarchy with his volte face on the recently concluded elections.”
Meanwhile, the US has “strongly condemned” Jammeh’s statement.
“This action is a reprehensible and unacceptable breach of faith with the people of The Gambia and an egregious attempt to undermine a credible election process and remain in power illegitimately,” said state department spokesman Mark Toner.
